The National Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence for Society is a doctoral program that focuses on the development of artificial intelligence technologies for the benefit of society.

Ph.D. Timeline First Year

• Study plan and supervisor (20th December): Ph.D. students must submit their study plan by 20th December of the first year, following the rules and forms provided.
  • Ph.D. students can propose a supervisor and one or more co-supervisors at this stage, with at least one being from academics.
  • If a supervisor has not been appointed, the principal investigator of the project or institution funding the Ph.D. scholarship will act as the default supervisor.

  • At least one of the supervisors must be from academics.
  • Ph.D. students can propose a supervisor and co-supervisors by 2nd May of the first year.
• Assessment panel (1st July, first year): The supervisors propose the composition of the individual assessment panel for the Ph.D. student by 1st July of the first year.
  • The assessment panel consists of the supervisors, co-supervisors, and at least two additional members to cover multi-disciplinary perspectives of the research.
  • At least two members of the panel must be members of the Ph.D. Board, with at least one not being a supervisor or co-supervisor.
• Planning of the first-year assessment meeting (15th September, first year): Ph.D. students contact the assessment panel to schedule a meeting between 15th September and 15th October for the presentation of the Ph.D. proposal.
• Ph.D. proposal delivery (15th September, first year): Ph.D. students prepare a Ph.D. proposal, a presentation, and an advancement report by 15th September of the first year.
  • The Ph.D. proposal consists of a paper (maximum 30 pages, excluding references) outlining research questions, motivations, challenges, and an overview of the state-of-the-art in the area of research.
  • The presentation is 30 minutes plus 10 minutes for Q&A.
  • The advancement report must be signed by the supervisor.
• First-year assessment meeting (15th September 15th October, first year): The Ph.D. student presents the Ph.D. proposal and advancement report to the assessment panel.
  • The meeting consists of a 30-minute presentation, 10 minutes for Q&A, and 20 minutes for discussion among the assessment panel members.
• Admission to the second year (31st October, first year): The Ph.D. Board decides whether to admit the Ph.D. student to the second year based on the Ph.D. proposal, advancement report, and assessment report.

• Admission to the third year (31st October, second year): The Ph.D. Board decides whether to admit the Ph.D. student to the third year based on the advancement report and assessment report.

Ph.D. Timeline Third Year

• Prorogation of the presentation of the Ph.D. thesis (1st June, third year): Ph.D. students can apply for a prorogation of the deadline for presenting the Ph.D. thesis (due at the end of the third year).
  • Applications for prorogation are submitted between April and May of the third year.
  • The prorogation period is not inclusive of the scholarship.
• Advancement report delivery (1st October, third year): Ph.D. students prepare an advancement report by 1st October of the third year.
  • The advancement report must be signed by the supervisor.
• Assessment of the third year studies (31st October, third year): The Ph.D. Board deliberates on the positive assessment of the third year studies based on the advancement report.
• Final exam application (31st October, third year): Ph.D. students submit the Final Exam Application through the university website before the end of the third year.
  • The application includes the fulfillment of a questionnaire evaluating the study and research experience and future perspectives.
• Admission to the PhD thesis defence procedure (31st October, third year, or end date of prorogation): The supervisors evaluate the eligibility of the Ph.D. thesis for the review process and final defense.
  • There is no assessment meeting at the end of the third year.
